I built up a 20lb SS hardtail this summer and tried an 18 and a 20 tooth cog, b ut the 19 was other sweet spot. The Surly was best because not only did they make a 19, but it has a wider base so it cannot hurt the cassette carrier, as some of the other cogs were not so nice. Don't cheap out and ruin your free hub - and an aluminum cog wont; last long on a SS.

I have used Surly cogs for 12+ years on my MTBs. Cogs between 16t - 22t have equipped my bikes without issue. There are lighter, flashier cogs on the market but Surly cogs are strong and reliable plus their price makes them a very good value, full stop.
If you can afford those expensive, unobtainium cogs, go for it but Surly cogs are tough to beat.

I have had great success with these Cogs for my SS bikes. I typically wear out most cogs quickly but these last me 1-2 years+ before they start showing wear.

One of the best options(for price) for single speed cogs, these cogs have a large enough surface area which helps avoid eating into freehub bodies.

I would never use aluminum again. These are the ony way to go for serious single speeders
