Reviews
Installed this in October 2016 and it is now February 2024. I use this 2-3 times a week and ride about 6000 miles a year. The kit installed without issues on my 1996 Avenir floor pump. Most of the time, I don't even use the locking lever when using on Presta valves. The rubber insert connector still holds well without leaking unless the tire valve core is bent. However, I would like the option of buying a replacement silicone insert since it looks a bit worn. I also use it sometimes to add a little pressure to my car tires instead of messing with my portable air compressor. I would like to see Topeak add an air release button to the SmartHead to fine tune the tire pressure and minimize air losses when removing the head from the tire valve. I would raise the rating to five stars for that modification.
The original head on my Joeblow Elite was pretty good for a while but had trouble sealing on presta valves and had to go up to over 150 psi for the valve to open. The SmartHead seals great every time opening the valve right away. Will not buy a floor pump unless it has a similar head in the future.
I replaced the head (and hose) on two of my pumps that were extremely worn.
This replacement works very well. You do have to be careful as the tab you need to pull to secure the head to the valve isn't curved quite enough (for me) and I have pinched my thumb trying to use it. Only once since it hurt and I didn't want to repeat that experience.
For the price, this is certainly a way to give an old pump new life and I don't regret going this way.
I thought this would be the fix for my Joe Blow floor pump, but it didn't do the trick. While the locking mechanism on the replacement functions much better than the original hose, this hose's plastic threaded fastener cracked when I screwed it onto the hose mount of the old pump. So now I'm using the new hose and head with an old piece from the original hose. This isn't what I was hoping for at all and it still leaks at the hose mount. I don't know . . .I'll probably end up buying a new pump, but this was kind of a wast of money and effort in the long run.
Replaced old pump head with this product to give new life to my old pump which saved me the expense of buying a new pump. Easy instructions and all required parts makes this an easy install. Recommend kit for any make of pump.
After I broke the chuck on my Specialized floor pump, I decided to try this kit. Very well made, easily installed and much cheaper than a new floor pump (my Specialized pump now works better than it did before). I'll probably buy another to upgrade my JoeBlow Sport.
The whole idea of a single head adapting to two different stem diameters seems suspect and my experience supports this. It was always extremely difficult to use on schrader and since the rubber seal gets squashed hard when sealing against the larger diameter schrader stem the seal soon failed. Then it was worthless for both stem types. It worked well for presta alone though.
Lot better than the stock one on my Zephal floor pump. The stock head broke the first week and this one is much better built! Easy to install and saved me from buying a new floor pump. I like this connecter that can be used on all valve types.
Purchased this to replace the same thing several years old and was pleased to find it again. The oversize lever is easy to use compare to the pump carried on the bike. The seal is tight, at least for several years.
I've been using a fairly robust Silca floor pump for a few decades, but its locking brass chuck has been having difficulty securely staying on the Presta valve when I pump up my tires up to 100-120 psi (the higher pressure is for the indoor training wheel). The chuck on the SmartHead Hose (whcih I've using for a few months now) is able to lock on the valve and hold pressure around it preventing the pressure gauge's needle from bouncing up & down with every stroke. The swap took less than 20 minutes and I didn't end up using any of the fittings that came in the kit - I simply used a tiny hose clamp that I had as a spare in my garage.
My only complaint is that the chuck needs slightly more effort to remove from the valve - whcih is a little disconcerting when I'm trying to prevent my hand from scraping against my wheels' bladed spokes.
I thought this would resolve my pump's leak at the connection point between the hose and the pump, but it is still there. However, the lever for attachingdetaching from the valve stem is way better than the original. This wasn't quite the solution I was seeking, but it is at least an improvement.
Needed to replace an old head and picked this one from the reviews. Easy to install and the longer hose is a plus. The head seals welland locks on securely. This works best with smooth vs. threaded stems. It takes a bit more effort to pull the head off. The only knock I have is that the locking lever could be a tad easier to access but, this minor. I would buy again.
The Joe Blow is a great bike tire pump. It has the capability to pump both stem types through the same head which I think is not too good because the rubber in the head gets mangled. I would prefer the head type where there are two different ports for the stem.
I had three floor pumps in my garage, two of which were inoperative because of worn-out heads or hoses. Otherwise, they seemed OK. Neither were Topeak products. Both were expensive when new. I took a flyer, and ordered one Topeak Smarthead upgrade kit, to see if it would work on my non-Topeak floor pumps. To my pleasure and surprise...it worked on both. The upgrade kit comes with a variety of connection plugs from the hose to the pump, evidently with the idea in mind that there are many good brands of floor pumps , most of which have specific connection plugs. Not only did the upgrade kit fit my non-Topeak floor pumps , the Smarthead is a major upgrqde in and of itself. I ordered a second upgrade kit. It is a great bargain, and a true upgrade in convenience and performance. I highly recommend it .
