Reviews
These covers are a major improvement from my previous Pearl Izumi covers (circa 2000). They go on without stress and the velcro closures work great. The design for the sole of the covers works great, holding the covers in place without interfering with cleats. The outside is more smooth and water resistant than how they appear in the photo. They are definitely not water proof but enough to ward off light rain or showers. Highly recommended.
I use these as a base layer over my mountain bike shoes. Large fits easily over 44s. I mention that because I had an earlier version of these from 20 years ago that were really difficult to get over your shoes. Since I ride in sub zero weather, I do add another (cheaper) XL shoe cover on top and wear battery heated socks. But these covers provide a nice insulated seal against the elements. I will wear these covers alone if the weather is 20 - 30 and that works for me.
These are reasonably good shoe covers, but I do wish they were a little warmer / air proof. I am what most folks would call an avid rider - ride about 150 miles / week just for fun and exercise. I tend to ride in dry but windy conditions. I was looking for a boot cover that would take me down to about 30 degrees F for up to 2 hours so I can ride outdoors in the wintertime when its not too crazy cold. I found these covers reliably keep my toes from feeling numb down to about 40 degrees F - if I ride below that my toes start to suffer on rides longer than an hour. If I want to ride in the 30's, I've taken to putting plastic bags over the shoes (under the covers) to help block some of the wind, putting two layers of socks on, and plastic bags over my toes. By the end of 1 1/2 - 2 hours, if its say 35 degrees out and windy, my toes are numb and I've had enough. Of course your experience will vary, but that my two cents. On the plus side they are very easy to put on. I wear a size 43 Wide shoe and bought the Large size Amphib cover and they are plenty big - they would certainly accommodate a larger size shoe.
After Gore Wear inexplicably discontinued their Goretex Thermo overshoe (what the hell they were thinking), this became the best available shoe cover.
Two of my friends are very satisfied with their purchase
Velcro closure beat zipper any day. More reliable and last longer, and far easier to put on and take off.
Extra insulation with primaloft extends the range of a regular shoe to a temperature below 20F for 1.5 hr.
Thee are two areas that can, and should improve:
- outer membrane should be water proof, instead of water resistant
- it needs extra length to extend beyond mid calf
I like to use these for a base layer since they fit well and stay in place.
For me, they are fine on their own for temps above 10 F. But for sub-zero rides, I like to layer shoe covers. The exact fit of these covers makes them a great base to layer over.
My only complain is the velcro wore out after one winter (riding most days).
But I liked the overall performance and fit enough to grab another pair for next year.
Great Covers. I purchased these to replace a pair of covers mid winter. Easy to get into, good fit around the toe and back. They worked down to sub zero temps on my commute when paired with the right socks. I have also worn them on several rainy days and they kept my feet very dry.
This is the 3rd pair of these covers that I've purchased. Each last about 2 years commuting daily through the winter months until the velcro wears out and won't stick any more - which is my biggest complaint about them, it's the premium velcro version, but the loop side ultimately frays to the point of not sticking any longer. The Waterproof holds up well with the occasional Nik-Wax wash.
Just bought a pair for this winter (2024), and they're noticeably smaller than my previous sets. I wear a size 44 shoe and the size Large from this year fits tighter than the last 2 sets I've had. It's workable, but tight.
I used to love these booties, but Pearl Izumi changed something. These are a men's Large and they won't go all the way around my ankles which are not beefy boys at all.
On the plus side, bottom of the toe seems to have a better fabric for all of the ground contact these will be making. I just don't love these. I'm trying to sell them.
I have other shoe covers, but wanted something a bit warmer. These fit the bill. I use them for 25 mile rides in 30 degree weather. They keep my feet warm. The thing I like even more is the ease of putting them on. Velcro straps work well. My other pair of a different brand fit much tighter and can be a pain!
